"So now, I'm going to make like a divorce and split."

Said Bob Dylan, at the end of his "Theme Time Radio Hour." After last week's marriage theme, this week's theme was divorce. If you guess that he played a lot of country songs, you are right. He certainly did, beginning with the first song you think of if you try to think of a divorce song. And speaking of country, to listen to the show, I got into my car with the satellite radio, and drove out into the country, out to the back roads somewhere near Cross Plains. It looked a little something like this:

Country road

Country road

UPDATE: The baseball episode of "Theme Time Radio Hour" has been added to the Baseball Hall of Fame Library archive.

I wish a gopher could have been standing on the side of that road.

My favorite divorce song title: "If you want to keep your beer real cold, put it next to my ex-wife's heart". Can't remember who sang it.

I've never seen a gopher or a badger in a zoo because I've never been to a zoo - can't stand to see animals caged or tied - but growing up on a farm, I've seen hundreds of gophers and probably a dozen badgers. The latter likes to eat the former by the way, so if the critters were holding hands, it would be the badger getting ready to lift the gopher up to his mouth for a quick snack/protein boost.

I've been to Wisconsin but once, in 1997. We took the City of New Orleans to Chicago, rented a car, and after finishing up some business in Madison, spent four days driving around aimlessly. We bought a map that included farm roads, and enjoyed days of scenery like that in these beautiful photos. Ok, there are lots of blue silos and dairy farms, but we didn't tire of them.

A little further up the road you get to a couple of my favorite named places:

Black Earth and Mazomanie.

A beautiful drive. A few years ago, you may have spotted some "Badgers" at the Shoe Box while driving through Black Earth!

Badgers? We ain't got no badgers. We don't need no badgers. I don't have to show you any stinking badgers.

Never been to a zoo? They're not all bad, meant both ways. And how else is a kid gonna develop empathy with a rhinoceros?

Has it occurred to anyone else that our gracious host also made "like a divorce and split" not long after posting this?

Sheesh, the divorce songs I can think of are 'Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth 'Cause I'm Kissing You Goodbye,' 'Husbands and Wives,' and 'Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.' And I'm not sure that they're really divorce songs.

Pretty fantastic scenery.

Especially that road that goes north from Dodgeville to Spring Green -- so you get to drive down the long hill at the top of which is House on the Rock.

You're right. I did split. But now I'm back.

I can't remember too many of the songs, but I do remember two of them rhymed "alimony" with "baloney." Same concept too: you'll be eating baloney if you have to pay alimony.

One of the movie sound clips was Danny DeVito from "War of the Roses."

Oh, and one of the songs was something about whether your lawyer would speak for you in heaven. Yikes!

Ann: Just delete this if it's too long, but how can guys be talking about gopher and badgers when there's some serious singing to be done?

Kissing You Goodbye, by
Waylon Jennings
_____

Verse 1:
I've learned to turn the other cheek
Is not what love's about
I've turned mine so many times
That I damned near wore 'em out
I've grown used to your abuse
And I thought I'd never quit
But I woke up this morning
Couldn't find my shiv-a-git
You've always liked to play your games
Well I got one for you
Pretend we're playing checkers girl
And it's your time to move
You'll find your suitcase on the porch
And the taxi in the drive
Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye

Verse 2:
I see you've finally made it home
You been out all night
Your artificial hair's a mess
And your clothes don't fit you right
I've given and forgiven
Till there ain't nothing left
But all you gave was just enough
To satisfy yourself
I can smell that whiskey in your hair
And sen-sen on your breath
If you ever tried to tell the truth
You'd choke yourself to death
I don't want your nasty kisses
And don't tell me no more lies
Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye
Get your tongue out of my mouth
I'm kissing you goodbye

Now THOSE pictures make me actually think Wisconsin isn't such a bad place.

I'm committed to my marriage though-- I live in a community property state.

Curious -- did Dylan play anything from "Blood on the Tracks"? His own raw take on the big D.
