Cute things that still walk the face of the earth.

The pygmy tarsier is not extinct:

Nor is the Waitaha penguin:

Unfortunately the Waitaha penguin is extinct. That Associated Press article is titled oddly. If you read it closely, what has been "found" is the bones of this species. It's a new species of penguin, prior to this time unknown, and it was alive just 600 some years ago, but it is nonetheless extinct.

Oh, no! At least we've still got the pygmy tarsier to cuddle.

The golden-mantled tree kangaroo is just one of dozens of species discovered in late 2005 by a team of Indonesian, Australian, and U.S. scientists on the island of New Guinea.

The animal is the rarest arboreal, jungle-dwelling kangaroo in the world, the researchers say. This was the first time the mammal was found in Indonesia, making it only the second site in the world where the species is known to exist.

"It's as close to the Garden of Eden as you're going to find on Earth," said Bruce Beehler, vice president of CI's Melanesia Center for Biodiversity Conservation and a co-leader of the expedition.

This was on the recent expedition to an area so remote that birds landed on the explorers' shoulders. If you follow the link, you'll see the kangaroo nestling in a scientist's arms.

Ok I know you didn't want to give garage mahal a tag but why did you post his picture?

I'll bet they would be extinct were it not for mankind's influence on climate. Therefore, to rectify our dangerous influence on this planet, we must eliminate both species.

Gregory Corso has a really neat poem about tarsiers that begins,

A tarsier bewrays the end of an epical rain.

There's lots of neat animals still around!

It's in the collection Long Live Man!

That first one should look familiar to any Unix user...

Well, then clearly we're going to have to take some of its DNA and resurrect it.

Ayeaye, Madam.

If scientists resurrected Neanderthal man, then in short order they'd feel compelled to resurrect a Neanderthal woman so that his life is not left cruelly unfulfilled. Then they'd have to be provided jobs, perhaps in Detroit, so they could be made to feel they fit in. I see nothing but trouble.

Poor Oliver. So near, and yet so far. Wanted so badly to mate but nobody would let him. The old lecher.
