U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights is investigating Yale "for its failure to eliminate a hostile sexual environment."

Apparently, the problem is male students:
One ... incident took pace in October last year when a group of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity pledges were surrounded by brothers from the same fraternity who chanted: 'No means yes! Yes means anal' at them in an area where most female freshman live.

In another incident, in September 2009, the so-called 'pre-season scouting report' was issued via email in which a group of male students circulated a list of 53 female students ranking them in order of how many beers they would have to have before they slept with them....
And on January 2008, a group of pledges from the Zeta Psi fraternity surrounded the entrance to the Yale Women's Centre at midnight holding signs saying, 'We Love Yale Sluts'.
It is argued that this behaviour limited women's equal access to educational opportunities at the university and that there were 'inadequate responses' to the sexual misconduct.
Yeah, "behaviour." It's the British press reporting this. The Daily Mail... where, by the way, the sidebar is sexually harassing me.

Hysterical. Well-crafted, AA.

So why don't the girls just circulate a list of the frat guys who don't perform well, who arrive a little early, or who are so modestly endowed that you don't feel them?

Who knew being free from the Boorish Behavior of FratBoys was a Civil Right!

Women rate men on how much of a dick they are, not how much of one they have. My guess is that this information is displayed prominently in the stall of a women's bathroom on campus.

Funny, I only dimly remember the presence of "Greek" fraternities at Yale. They were definitely marginal organizations. Everyone I knew was involved in secret... I mean senior societies, whose members were much more interested in being naked with each other than passing around lists.

The Yale Women's Center was an unkempt doorway with a dirty threshold and a poorly-painted door, hung with construction paper signs, which I remember, perhaps erroneously, being next door to Durfee's Sweets Shop. Sweets and sours, next-door neighbors.

Good thing the government, with the help of our universities and colleges, is working on fixing that little "problem".

Just eliminate male students.

Problem solved.

Why don't they simply tell these idiots, "We know who you are and we'll spread the word - no sex for any of you".

I know, settling it themselves is so... unsocialist.

It's understanding the modern version of game. Reading the blog, Citizen Renegade will provide insight as to where they are coming from. I seem to recall some scorned ex-girfriend who started up a website that allowed other scorned girls post less than admirable comments about their ex-boyfriends. I thought there was some brouha about how it and don't know if it was ever taken down.

But suffice to say MadMan, don't kid yourself that the ladies don't share that kind of info among themselves.

People who try to stop 18 year old boys from being borish always just look stupid themselves. Like the people in my school who did the "take back the night" march every year to the "shoe tree" (iirc, each shoe represented some girl two frat guys had slept with or some such nonsense).

Hilarious, ridiculous, useless.

The problem is the women don't have a union. Seriously. traditionally, women have been in control of the sexual supply/demand process.

But with so many women giving it away so cheaply, it's hard for any woman to demand a fair price. :)

Men on the other hand see a glut in supply and can therefore be piggish in their demands.

Effectively, it's the women who have done this to themselves by a lack of solidarity in the marketplace.

Some of that marketplace training used to be provided by mothers and at College by Sorority House Mothers.

Now the girls (and I used that term on purpose) get their queues from watching porn sites.

Yr right. Should be like the FBI, in ivy league frat houses as a whole . Include UCs as well.

May Bee,
Yale takes Government grants and subsidies for a number of purposes - in fact they don't even have to do that, the courts have held that their students have Government grants will suffice, even if the college objects to their taking them - and the Government thinks that is sufficient reason for them to interfere with even the smallest details of the college administration.

Yeah, but that pesky First Amendment makes it problematic for the govt to openly require Yale to censor frat boy speech. It will be more subtle--"nice little grant you've got there--it'd be a shame if something happened to it...."

Most rational humans object to klansmen, freemasons, mobs, gangs, etc--a fortiori they should object to collegetown gangs aka frats (catering to young, white collar criminals rather than ordinary thug sort).

First, it was just Yale fraternities. Then it was Yale and UC fraternities. Now it's U.S. fraternities? And regardless of their ethnic makeup? Meaning you count the Iota's as Klan?

Not only are you seriously uninformed about fraternities (sororities most likely as well), but you go out of your way to look illiterate.

Is "Klan" the progresso-tard meme-o'-the-month right now?

Not that they haven't been throwing around brain-dead KKK slurs for decades now, but in the last few weeks of my wasting time online, progresso-tards have been leaping right out of the gate with the Klan merde, before a thread has even had time to degenerate in the standard fashion.

Could be that this increased "klan-ishness" is just random, and only seems to have reached saturation level of late. Or maybe they're getting frustrated that "racist" isn't functioning so well as a STFU tactic anymore: ("Screaming 'racist' is all we know how to do, and it's just not working anymore!")

From what I can see (I'm only reading your post) that's one stupid incident per year - hardly a problem that keeps anyone from learning or worth an investigation. Here, let me sum it up for you:

You kids are immature and stupid.

And that's not to be translated as "boys will be boys". I'm sure women at Yale do stupid shit, too, but the guys aren't supposedly-strong-feminists who go whining to their superiors for new rules and laws over any perceived slight. Fuck them. I'm with MadisonMan:

Given a chance, guys will enter a farm animal in any campus beauty contest.

The significance is praise of low male standards, which is after all what gives women a chance, not their being a great deal for the men.

This is a variant.

The law says that women are a good deal without any low standards necessary, which is a nice story but runs into reality.

I think that this is when you know that our government has much too much of our money to spend.

My guess is that investigation this is being run by some GDIs who were blackballed when they were undergrads, and likely for good reason.

Of course, fraternities are sexist. And, sororities are just as sexist. And, yes, you are going to get boorish behavior out of 19 year old males - guaranteed. But a federal investigation of typical 19-20 year old male behavior? Come on.

And, the idea that fraternities and sororities are racist is about 45 year out of date. My house started allowing Jews to join around 1960, and by the time I got there late in the decade, it was about 1/4 Jewish. We bid on Blacks without any resistance from the national fraternity, but did run into problems for a bit with an Asian. And Hispanics were not an issue either. And, within a couple of years of that - by the mid-1970s, the fraternities and sororities were already working for affirmative action (actively recruiting (most) minorities based on their being minorities (gays were not included there, and gays who joined stayed in the closet because the last thing that a house wanted was to be known as a gay house).

My kid joined a house recently, and I was surprised to discover that they too went through the same integration in the mid to late 1960s as the fraternities and sororities did where I went to college. One sorority at my kid's school quit its national organization over it wanting to admit a Black, and they are still independent today as a result.

So, not surprisingly, J does what he always does - looking ignorant and uninformed, parroting talking points from some fetid libtard swamp.

I earned my undergrad degree at Yale, and I'm typing this from a seat at the Yale medical campus. I have never been at a mainstream institution more hostile to males than Yale College, and my career has taken me to a few other top tier universities. Yale's males are demonized as potential rapists in countless "orientation" sessions, classrooms, and sensitivity programs from the moment they matriculate until the moment they graduate. It is little wonder that the university is struggling to recruit classes with some semblance of gender-balance. Even fields traditionally dominated by males (like sci/tech), are dealing with a noticeable deficit in the number of male applicants and in the yield of students who actually decide to matriculate. (For the record, I think that gender balance is a very good thing.)

I abhor the repugnant behavior displayed by the frat boys in question, but people who truly are concerned with the creation of hostile environments might wish to consider the likely responses of at least some young males when they are subjected to a chronic, social presumption of guilt.

Biff said...

Phil 3:14 said shorter version:

No, that's not what I said at all, but it doesn't surprise me that someone might desire to interpret it that way. It's impossible to take courses in the humanities and social sciences at Yale without hearing about how people's behaviors are powerfully influenced, if not dictated, by oppressive, societal norms and structures. Does that type of sociological analysis not apply to male college students? When everyone is a "reactionary," why is it hard to apply that label to a group that may actually be exhibiting reactionary behavior?

My point was that the act of enforcing certain, well-meaning (or not) policies that impact a particular group might have unintended consequences. Those who advocate for such policies should be cognizant of whether their favored policies are having their intended effect, or if, much to everyone's surprise, those policies might be having the opposite of the intended effect. All I'm asking for is a little intellectual consistency.

Phil 314 said...

There used to be this thing called a slap. Women utilized it if a boorish man said something so outrageously rude as to be threatening or abusive.

If the man receiving the slap truly deserved it, it shamed him. The safeguard was that if he didn't deserve it, it shamed the woman delivering it.

Whatever happened to that?

But then, I don't see anything in this complaint, unless the taunts were delivered in threatening rather than teasing ways, that rises to the level of a slap, let alone a formal complaint.

Except this:

A student recalled a member of the Pundits forcing attendees to kiss each other and that another Pundit forced a male friend’s face onto another’s penis.

That is very bad, but victims were men, and it is not part of the Title IX complaint. It was, however, reported to and investigated by the police.

SGT Ted said...

Don't you guys get it yet? Where ever women are present, only what they think is proper conduct is what everyone is going to be allowed to do or say.

Free speech? Nope. Not if it doesn't pass the gyno-test for being inoffensive to any woman anywhere, unless its a woman saying it.

Thats why women can show cleavage and leg and bat their eyes and use their sexuality to manipulate at work but a pin-up calendar of swimsuit models in some poor schlubs cubicle is offensive and sexual harrasment.

Not being content at running their husbands/boyfreinds lives, they have used their vaginas to pussy-whip the law into enforcing their whims on everyone around them whereever they are. The end result is represented by the article posted here by AA.

In response to threatening or abusive behavior? Please. It is a female's response to a male's acute harrassment accompanied by physical intimidation. (And if it isn't used that way, it is battery.)

Also, we're not talking about delivering a blow; if it's done that way, it's not a slap.

Note that I have already written that nothing in this blog post rises to the level of a slap.
