"The 'Today' co-host saga took an almost surreal turn Friday morning..."

"... with Savannah Guthrie slipping into Ann Curry’s old chair and everyone around her, including the network, acting as if nothing had changed."

Well, nothing changed for me. I've never watched any of those chirpy morning shows. But I do see something surreal at the link: a video of a "body language expert" purporting to "decode" the movements of the arms and legs of a tearful Ann Curry on her last "Today."

So... they treated it like any other job change? I'll never understand the news.

But remember, these ladies are sisters. Female solidarity. Sisterhood is powerful. But watch your back, Savannah.

There was discomfort? Perceptive!

"Sisterhood is powerful" against manhood, but leave the sisters alone, they will start a bitchy cat fight in no time.

Yeah. When I first read this, I wondered if Ann Curry had died.

Ann Curry is the best news announcer NBC has, so naturally they let her go.

Savannah Guthrie has so far been NBC Evening News' "special legal correspondent," is a generation younger, and probably have not yet made the mistake of expressing private doubts about the official line.

Today Show. What is that?

Actually, I sometimes watch Charlie Rose and Erica Hill on CBS 'This Morning." But NBC's Curry was thrown under the bus, and hard. You can see how much it hurt. That video is excruciating: "Ann Curry's Emotional Farewell at 'Today Show'".

How did they handle it when they changed Darrins on Bewitched? Did they go the Today Show route and just act like nothing was different? Or was it the result of a spell gone horribly wrong? Like, Samantha broke her nose after being hit in the face with a football and then tried fixing the vacuum cleaner with a spell but turned Darrin into Dick Sargent instead? Could the Today Show have tried working this explanation in? I'm sure viewers were left terribly perplexed.

Trying to care, trying to care...

...

... damn, I must be some sort of bastard. I just can't will myself to care.

To me, this is Today Show narcissism being echoed by a New York news source. It feels like royal courtiers gossiping: "Gaze upon ME, for I am experiencing Earth Shaking Change"... "Oh look, the royal "THEM" is experiencing Earth Shaking Change, we must watch..."

Geh.

Somebody wake me when the banal stops intersecting with the trivial.

I'm not sure that couch works on that set, either. You have that electric blue backdrop and then...what is that? Taupe? I wonder if the NY Daily News would find it "almost surreal" if the producers changed the couch and everyone acted as though nothing had changed. Maybe swap it out for a loveseat and chair, and put Guthrie on the chair. A nice, subliminal, subversive way for Matt Lauer to say, "Bitch, you ain't one of us."

This is supposed to be like no other TV show that ever replaced anybody (like Charlie Bickford replacing Lee Cobb), how?

Oh, they're girls.

So it's special.

David said...

Younger woman replaces older woman. It's an old story and Ann Curry knew just what was happening.

What nonsense. When NPR terminated its morning correspondent's contract a few years ago it made WAPOs front page. The leftist community was outraged. So was I, but only because the government was partially funding his 350k per year for leftist propoganda. Now I can't remember his name, and I bet neither can 9 of 10 leftists outraged at the time. They seem to think the ability to land a 350k per year job comes with a lifetime guarantee.

In Curry's case it's a 10M a year job. She made 20 million and we're supposed to believe it's wrong for the show to care more about ratings than her feelings? I think the 20 million takes care of her feelings just fine.

Considering they spend all their time whining about the poor the left spends an unsupportable amount of time making sure leftists in government and NGOs make as much as successful business owners.

I actually like Ann Curry, but I switched turn to Charlie Rose on CBS where you can actually see in-depth interviews and no sofa chirpy talk,

I saw a photograph of Ann Curry this morning in the newspaper and I thought, "That's Ann Curry? She used to look much older." Of course, it has been probably 20 years since I bothered to watch TV news. I thought the same thing when I saw Andrea Mitchell on the internet a few weeks ago doing that dishonest Romney presentation. Life must be hard for women in the news.

Oh the phoniness.

"Ann, sit right here and let us tell you how wonderful you are before we kick your sorry butt out of your job."

This is the adult version of the break up where your opposite tells you "we can still be friends."

THIS is why I read Ann Althouse. Good writing about an important issue by someone who knows her subject. Thanks AA.

I also -- as a conservative -- appreciate CJ Roberts' restraint and modesty in reaching an opinion that did not VOID what Congress did (much as I loathe the law and how is was passed) but simply stripped away what was plainly at odds with the Constitution, restated the bogus "penalty" as the tax is obviously is and left the rest to politicians to deal with.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

WTF? I was reading about Roberts maybe switching his opinion and clicked "Post a Comment" and ended up here -- where my comment is just a bit out of place.

Something screwy with linking code.

Ann Curry did not have the personality to host morning tv. She was also a horrible interviewer, especially when she put on her caring voice.

She was good back when she read their news, and it's a shame she didn't get Katie Couric's CBS opportunity instead of Couric. That would have kept two people on the path to jobs that suited their talents.

@MIKE: Your first paragraph made an excellent snark before your second paragraph gave it away.

I don't watch these shows either, so the web coverage of the "controversy" about her status was amusing. Particularly when you realize that her anguish was soothed with the application of A $10M "greenback poultice" in the form of a severance package. Some paparazzi photos of her recently showed her leaving her black Escalade, from the passenger side. No doubt she has a driver assigned by NBC. Of course, when you get to be Diane Sawyer grade, even your diver has a driver. Which makes it that much more egregious when they feign concern while reading the latest unemployment report, or information regarding income or wealth inequity.

Curry was always stumping for anti-discrimination against 'girls'. She was Paul Harveyesque in the ability to turn any topic to her pet project- "In our next hour Al Roker squeezes into a wetsuit on his dive at The Great Barrier Reef and I'll show you how this is harming the self-esteem of young women here at home...''

Meh. Good riddance- HuffPo awaits...

I read somewhere that Ann Curry said her farewell on the Today show yesterday, they went to commercials and when they returned Savannah Guthrie was sitting on the couch were Curry was just a few minutes earlier.

Ann Curry got disappeared...

Here's how David Hinckley described it in the Daily News:

Lauer said she had "the biggest heart" of anyone he had met in the business, prompting Curry to joke that she was "sorry I'm a sob sister today."

The tone of the farewells was colored, though, by Curry's obvious reluctance to leave. She clasped hands with Morales and at the end Lauer kissed her on the side of the head.

After she finished and the show broke for local news, the team skipped its usual wrap-up walk out on the Rockefeller Center plaza.

The cameras went right back to the studio, where Guthrie was in the seat Curry had occupied. They went straight into promotion for the 9 a.m. hour.

I realize that Guthrie was the host of the 3rd hour but the whole situation seemed to be handled in a ham-fisted manner.

I think NBC can learn much from Tom Cruise. He always leaves his wives a year or two before they hit the wall. Katie Holmes is still relatively young and cute, and he doesn't look too caddish breaking up with her. Now if they had fired Ann Curry a few years ago when she still had some zip on her fast ball this could have been avoided. Savannah Guthrie is willowy and pretty, but on such a slender girl the crow's feet land early. I'd recommend firing her in a year or two so we don't have to endure this sad spectacle again.

An observative: I was raised on 'The Today Show' but stopped watching 30 years ago. They would have a 'hard news' interview at the top of the hour and then at half-hour news they would report the interview as something earth shaking. It turns out the only network reporting on the interview was NBC and the only NBC show reporting on it was 'The Today Show', therefore it wasn't news.

A joke. Way back when TV Guide occasionally took questions from readers. in the late 70s one wrote in asking how TTS was broadcast to the rest of the US.

The answer was: TTS is 'live' for both hours on the East Coast. In the Mid-West the first hour is 'live' and the second hour taped. Mountain and Pacific time are both taped and in Hawaii they still get Dave Garroway...

This still makes me laugh.

How did they handle it when Barbara Walters replaced J. Fred Muggs?

ampersand said...

They are running old Burns and Allen shows in my area. The Harry Morton character Fred Clark played was replaced by Larry Keating in the middle of an episode.

They froze the action, George Burns introduced the new actor and the show continued.

According to Wikipedia J. Fred Muggs is still alive. He's 60 years old.

Well, how did they handle it when they replaced Joel with Mike?

Meanwhile at UCLA this morning, they renamed Beautiful Curry Pavilion (formerly Beautiful Pauley Pavilion, Beautiful Norville Pavilion, Beautiful Couric Pavilion, and Beautiful Vieira Pavilion) to Beautiful Guthrie Pavilion.
