"A new and massive poll of 2,029 18- to 29-year-olds from Harvard’s Institute of Politics just released..."

"... found that of those who say they will 'definitely be voting,' 51 percent want the GOP in charge, 47 percent favoring Democratic control."

There's that pesky 47% again. Poor Romney got the pillory for citing that portentous figure.

How will they deal with Harvard?

Young people voting Republican en masse?

It's the end times! Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!

I'm not staying up to see election returns Tuesday night, but I do plan to spend all day on Wednesday reading the the Journ-o-listers and the Kubler-Ross Model should the GOP manage not to dork up this election.

Is that wrong of me?

For a survey of this demographic in a smaller state like Wisconsin, that's actually a pretty decent sample size. For comparison, the Gallup daily tracking poll surveys 500 people for their daily sample size.

Millenials, like Xers, are still very much up for grabs. The Bush years didn't do much to pull them into the GOP, and the Obama years did little to make them loyal Democrats. One way to look at it is that we're a very middle-swing nation these days, but another way to look at it is most people in the country are apprehensive about the future and don't see either side really addressing it.

Smart Republicans will capitalize on the current swing before the millenials sour on them again.

Problem is the 47% find ways to vote more than once.

Well put. If this election turns into a wave, the Democrats will have richly earned their defeat. I'm not at all willing to say that the Republicans will have earned their victory.

What does this survey remind me of? Oh, yes...

Kinder: These people don't know their enemy is the GOP. They think the enemy is their own Democratic Party!

Reisman: Maybe that's because the GOP hasn't done anything to them yet.

You know, the flip side of this is that if the GOP wins the Senate and retains control of the House? The American Public are going to expect some kind of bi-partisan measures coming from Congress. just my guess.

It has been obvious for a while that on the big issues, the Republicans are making arguments and the Democrats are hectoring. Which would you choose?

Gay Marriage is in the bank. Maybe they don't want Social Security bankrupted paying the way of old farts like myself? Or to be forced to subsidize my high blood pressure in their forced health insurance plan? Good on 'em, I say. About time you woke up.

Screw that. Keep the rules that Howie Reid put in place.

Yes they have. However, several of the arguments play best to the base of the GOP, and not for the wider populace. Repeal of Obamacare for example. I'm not sure it could be totally undone, and there are a lot of people who have been conditioned into thinking that even with reform, going back to the system in place 6 years ago is a non starter. And since those kids are staying in Mom and Dad's basement due to this administration's policies, quite a few parents are fine with keeping their kids on their health insurance. It's a way to make sure johnny and jane have some kind of coverage. I'm also concerned what will come out of GOP controlled congress in the spirit of bipartisanship. Finally, every time Obama vetoes a bill, the press is going to blare the old "obstructionist" horn. just something to think about.

Brando said...

Unless those rules are why Reid is about to become Minority Leader.

I doubt anything is going to get passed, except maybe a trade deal or possibly Keystone. But the GOP can at least put some generally popular bills on the president's desk, using that to run on for 2016.

Most likely I think is that President Penandphone will take executive action to a degree that he will basically dare them to impeach him.

My view is just the opposite of this.

The President will give speeches and bluster and talk about veto's, but when the bill's get to his desk, he'll sign them.

Because he doesn't care. He cares about golfing, parties, speeches, love from the masses, etc.

Governing? Not so much.

You cannot rule without the White House.
However, with McConnell as Majority Leader there should at least be some debates in the Senate and perhaps some votes taken.

I agree somewhat but, with Harry Reid at the barricade, what could they do ? The news media is hostile so they need a Reagan to get word out.

Romney tried but the GOTV was not good enough and he was savaged all summer with no ability to respond. Here's hoping the new Chair will be better at technology or know somebody who is.

The GOP is on the right side of most major issues...Immigration, Pipeline, Spending. Obamacare.

And they'll see Barry, Mr.38% and dropping like a rock, Veto, veto, veto, veto.

This is 100% correct. It will lead to a political/constitutional crisis.

It will be interesting times in which to live. I hope it will be satisfactorily resolved without bloodshed, but I'm not optimistic.

At which point the obvious counter-move is to impeach not the President, but the people working for him. "[A]ll civil Officers" are subject to impeachment for criminal acts.

On Hope and Change, one of the things young people hoped Barack Obama would change was the Democratic Party.

Pelosi and Reid pushed back against that, and the Democratic Party remains pretty much set in its ways.

That's a large part why Martha Coakley may get her second comeuppance here in Massachusetts.

Age 18 to 29 means 4 to 15 when Bill Clinton left in 2000, and 2 to 13 during the Lewinsky scandal.

Obamacare will have to be taken apart piece by piece like a pile of pick-up sticks, in order not to hurt those those who do not deserve to be hurt by it. It was created by a single throw-down, we have to pass it to see what's in it, single thrust. But it still needs to be taken apart.

Anonymous said...

When interpreting the results, bear in mind that 63% of respondents said "I'm totes voting... where do I go to download the app?"

The solution that I see is simply to make it voluntary. That will leave the Medicaid people the same and allow everybody else to escape. Obamacare is simply Medicaid for all and it is time to accept that.

We could go to a better system easily. high deductible insurance, which Obamacare has prepared people for, plus health savings accounts. Let the poor go to a Medicaid system with limited networks and salaried doctors. We have suffered enough for the dream of "one tier medicine" and the fraud of that was exposed very nicely by the ACA.

Unfortunately, while that is the most politically-attractive solution, it is also the single worst solution from an economic perspective. You're keeping the budget-breaking expenditures while eliminating the means of paying for them.

Strike a different tone, troll, or keep on keeping on, lamely.

As for what is wrong with your question? Try asking one that doesn't ask somebody to predict the future. Try asking one about something somebody within the power structure of the Republican Party has suggested instead of in your fevered imagination.

Just give up the pose, Steve Uhr. Or steve uhr. Maybe both of you should stop.
