"A 4-month investigation into a University of Kansas professor who used a racial slur in class has concluded the word was used in an educational context and not intended to be racist...."

Yes, but...
The university recommended that [Andrea] Quenette undergo cultural competency training, re-evaluate orientation curriculum to include more diversity support and pair up with a faculty member. The school also recommended possibly reassigning duties within the communications department.

Higher Education Bubble update...

If you have seen the effect this system has on your kids, after raising them to become well educated, independent adults, you know however ridiculous it sounds, its really going on.

I would like to recommend that the university administration involved in this investigation undergo common sense training, re-evaluate their job duties to include more higher learning support, pair up with a puppy, and possibly be reassigned latrine duty.

My takeaway on this is that the university is creating a rather strong incentive for instructors to ditch any and all reference to minority culture lest it be misinterpreted by trigger happy zombies in their class.

On a related note, could you even show the original theatrical cut of Pulp Fiction on campus anymore?

When will we start seeing reeducation camp sentences handed down for professorial slurs against Christians, Republicans, conservatives, or pro-lifers?

My little cousin who is a freshman in college is taking English Comp 101, and the professor laughingly told them "you might as well think of this as Feminism 101." Their one and only textbook is Feminism is for Everybodyu and she has to write three papers "from a feminist perspective."

The higher education collapse can't come fast enough to suit me.

"Cultural competence" training is tantamount to being sent to reeducation camps. America's universities today would make Solzhenitsyn blanch.

Of course, the purpose of class diversity schemes is to marginalize and manage diverse classes, thereby ensuring peace and harmony in our time. Mass exodus from second and third-world nations contributes to class diversity. Hate crimes ensure that freedom of speech will not be construed under normal standards of rational. Mass abortion or the selective child doctrine further contributes to reducing individual diversity.

It really is Orwellian. Both Bernie and Hillary are completely behind this type of nonsense. It is totalitarianism, plain and simple. Someone needs to call bullshit on the bullshitters. And that is Trumps job this cycle.
It is a house of cards that will fall apart, if only someone takes the first shot.
Doesn't anyone notice that the State is now telling us what we can say, what we can eat, what the proper behavior is?
Seriously, it is time to blow the motherfucking thing up.

We have created a very dangerous situation in this country by enabling Group A to ruin the life of a member of Group B because of a single word uttered. When does the pushback begin? And tell me again how oppressed black people in higher education are, when the so-motivated among them wield this kind of destructive power? The professor was already bending over and kissing ass ("Being a white person, I can't possibly understand your struggle you poor dears" which by the way is bullshit because I am white and I have absolutely been discriminated against and slurred by brown people multiple times in my life; however I don't build a victim-class identity around it) and did it in slightly the wrong way and then had to go through this bullshit. It makes my blood boil that evidently the university can't see the danger to civil society that they are enabling, or are too chickenshit to stand up to it.

The federal government needs to get out of the higher education business. No more student loans and grants and let the colleges do whatever they want. No Title VI or Title IX restrictions etc. Let the state's take care of them.

Honky? Cracker? Oh, wait, follow the link to the original article: "nipper".

I was just reading Linda Gottfredson's Lessons in academic freedom as lived experience, which showcases much more serious issues than just saying "nipper", namely liberal anti-science censorship.

I propose a new reality show "$20 and a Ticket Home". In this show, African-American college students will be given a chance to demonstrate their cultural competence by being placed in an African city, 20 miles from the airport, with a $20 bill and an air ticket home. But NO CELL PHONE. Who will make it? Stay tuned.

It's not that Europe was so much better - around 1935, Europe was full of dictatorships from Estonia to Portugal, with only some exceptions that pre-dated World War I. It's very hard to establish a good government.

It is also the reason for the establishment of both parties falling into disrepute. One through affirmative action and the other through tacit complicity.

Sammy is right.
Decolonization was often disastrous.
It hasn't been fashionable to make the argument in the last 70 years (or longer, since Wilson started the modern fashion), but there is absolutely no empirical support that national independence has a positive social or economic effect, independent of the collinear general effects of modernity. Or national unity for that matter.

buwaya said...

On matters like this, consider the possibility that the administrators reaction is similar to that of the management of a fast food establishment. The employee may be in the right, but for the sake of the bottom line one doesn't want to get a reputation for annoying the paying customers.
A lot of the college controversies and other behavior can be explained similarly. In most cases I think it's simply a question of which position annoys and puts off a larger proportion of the revenue stream.
It's not about right and wrong, just business.

Not all colonies were the same. The British were actually pretty serious about providing good government and creating good infrastructure. They are very few examples of former British colonies becoming failed nations. Corrupt yes, often tribal..but usually functioning and providing basic services. The Spanish and Germans however, were simply interested in producing the highest profit for the mother country. Many of the poorest nations with the most corrupt governments are former Spanish colonies.

That being said, the best thing we could do for the poorest people in the world is to go into places like Somali, and Ethiopia, and yes even Mexico and set up colonial governments under the British model.

It is so so so disgusting that I can’t even stand reading it. Such people can never be allowed to work with people, not even with the animals. I am sure that the kind of educators are those who recommend our students help to buy an essay. Instead of setting a good example, we see an anti-example! I guess I will never understand what makes people so cruel that they start hating someone because of skin color. What if we were all blind? You can’t see the skin color? What would you hate then?
