At the "Writing About the Law" conference.

I'm watching the second panel at the conference now. My panel -- about law review writing -- is over, but you can read about it over here on Larry Solum's blog. The second panel are all people who write about law for the popular reader: Dahlia Lithwick (of Slate), Adam Cohen (NYT), Jamie Heller (WSJ), and Richard Sweren ("Law and Order").

Here's a picture of me -- arranged randomly -- with Dahlia Lithwick:

Althouse and Lithwick

I think that's Jim Lindgren's thumb. Here is the possibly dangerous and unlawful Lindgren:

And David Lat is here too. Here he is explaining something to conference organizer Cameron Stracher:

David Lat and Cameron Stracher

Here's David's description of my panel. Hey, he gives me a quote for the banner! And here he is on the second panel.

And here's some idle chatter before the panel starts:

That's got to be a thrill for Dahlia. ;)

Re Randy Barnett, this seems as good an opportunity as ever to exhort all readers here to go and read his excellent book Restoring the Lost Constitution, and having done so, you should then read Steve Calabresi's excellent explanation of why Randy's totally wrong about individual rights, S. Calabresi, The originalist and normative case against judicial activism: a reply to Professor Randy Barnett, 103 Mich. L. Rev. 1081 (2005).

I have a great deal of respect for Randy's scholarship, which is to a fault very well written and researched, and often very persuasive. But to be honest, I admit that I've lost a little bit of respect for him after his spat with Scalia -- although to be fair, the odds were against him: I can count on one hand the people who I would bet had a better than even chance of persuading me that they were right rather than Scalia in the event of a dispute, and two of them are dead!

Is it just me, or does it seem like Dahlia Lithwick has really short arms?

Were there any discussions on the ongoing practice of replacing (competent) US Attorneys with political appointees that don't have to face the Senate for approval?

Oh my gosh! Dahlia Lithwick knows how to smile?!?

I'm just a male so all I'm doing is undressing the both of them with my eyes.

Oops, sorry. Click on all links first, THEN ask questions. I've got it. It's still cute!

I think this captures 'matronly' much better than either of the women depicted in this post.

...yes, but only as in "My that's one big box of weed I've gotten for my birthday. Thank you son."

Supreme Court justices: They're just like us. They get cornered at cocktail parties by matronly women they don't really know.

Ruth,

I always thought Lithwick was in her late 20s or so. She is obviously well over 40 and not much younger than Althouse. It just suprised me. She must have had a career before law school.

You look fetching in the de rigueur black-and-white femprof attire.

I was just about to write that, sans de rigueur, Ruth Anne. :)

Ann, you look lovely. Seriously.

That demi-scallop plunging neckline reduces the severity of the style and colour, and makes you look sleek.

Women rarely compliment each other this fulsomely about dress sense, so enjoy.

Cheers,
Victoria

And I do believe Ann get her hair, cut and dyed specially for the occasion. Now let's hope her manicure is up to snuff, too.

(That's more like it)

Cheers,
Victoria

Victoria - I think it's the sleekness that makes her look sleek. ;)

Relieved to discover that I am not alone in finding that photograph intensely alluring.

And Ms. Lithwick has had her own fashion critic.

Can't say all that reading has done her any good, though at least she avoided the button-down shirt.

But that hair?! Where did that come from?

Who are these people?

Who is Daliah?

Are we supposed to know who that is?

Who is David Lat?

The very famous David Lat.

Never heard of him.

I love how Ann tries to make this into some kind of important Summit.

...that takes place in a windowless room with a projector and white walls.

Of course, we've all dreamed of taking a trip to New York, and that's just how we'd spend a holiday weekend...talking about citations, law review, research.

...the esoteric vernacular---

Hey, I know who Cameron Stracher is ----, an actual real-life published author!

But, what's he doing toiling, ---burning daylight at that place?

Peace, Maxine

Victoria: I threw in the "de rigeuer" precisely because I don't speak French and because it was about fashion.

No, Ruth Anne! I wasn't critiquing or anything. :)

Cheers,
Victoria

Look at you Miss Althouse with your opinion piece in this Saturday's New York Times editorial page.

For those of you who don't have times select sorry but it is a great editorial.

A weekend in NYC and now your very own editorial in the NY Times.

You must miss it out here? Madison is great, but there is nothing like the excitement of NYC.

Litwick could not be over 40 - she wears her blouse not tucked in and looks au courant rather than simply messy.

Too much make-up. Too much hair dye. And the tired black uniform.

Yum, yum!!

Boston: I'm not seeing that the column is up yet... but yeah, I have a Saturday/Tuesday column until March 3rd.

Victoria: I didn't make any special hair appointments for this (or any trip). I get my hair done once a month by the same person who's done it for maybe 15 years.

When they do a great job, why change.

That's really cool. Their circulation will increase by at least one additional buyer for a couple of weeks. :)

Uh. What happened to the first picture?

Ann Althouse said...

Tiggeril is referring to some weird hack of my Flickr page that was causing the picture to be something else -- a swimming pool for no apparent reason. Can anyone explain that? I figured out a work-around, but I don't know why it happened.

Simon said...

Wasn't a swimming pool here - it showed up beifly as a couple of cats lying around on someone's floor. I was about to email you about it, but it seems to be fixed now.

Why is it that when anyone else makes a negative comment about Althouse, hordes of her lovely and loyal commenters instantly come to her defense, but when Maxine Weiss floats in at random to take a shot, no one says a word? It's not right, Maxine; you shouldn't be so obnoxious as to make me want to defend Althouse..
