Diavlog notes and doodles.

DSC01356

From a Bloggingheads recorded this morning. I'll link to it when it's up, but meanwhile, I was amused by what ended up on the page in front of me.

Ann,

I've read that about 85% of college students these days use print instead of cursive writing when asked to write on exams. Or they use a kind of hybrid form of print with joined letters. Does that percentage sound right to you? I notice that you used print when jotting down notes here. Is that usual for you? Any thoughts about handwriting today?

@ Jeffrey

We bring laptops. 99% of us don't write at all.

Newt's all over the place on critical issues.

My theory on that is Newt thought 'in that feverish little brain' (to quote Margo from All About Eve) he could be a maverick like McCain.

yes, which one is nitecruzr?

Or nitesoilr, or nitecrawlr, or whatever he is called.

could Newt be nitecrawlr?

Possible.

Please.

Kicking Newt while he is down is just not fair.

Interesting.

I teach ESL at the college level and in-class comps are still all handwritten. Mostly printed. The exceptions are usually Russian speakers who learn cursive Cyrillic from the very beginning.

By the way, if you have to write, what do you use? Print? Cursive? Or a hybrid?

What this reveals about AA is deeply, deeply disturbing. I beg you Meade, run. Run now. Don't bother packing, just run. Run until your lungs burst.

@ Jeff

When I do write, it almost exclusively print.

Print most definitely. I'm on the phone a lot and tend to take a lot of handwritten notes. Lots of short-hand, but I have to force myself to slow down because I won't be able to understand my own notes later. Especially when I'm trying to get ten different spinning plates in the air, so to speak.

When I do dabble in cursive, usually for greeting cards, birthdays, etc, it's almost painful how out of practice I am. I used to have very precise, small, orderly cursive, but more than a decade's disuse has rendered it blah.

One thing that's come up recently...signature. I sign so many things at work that I'm basically down to only making the first letters of first and last name legible. Everything else is a squiggle. My 7-year-old saw that and asked, "what is that?"

How do explain that one to someone you're trying to instill not only good penmanship in, but a good work ethic as well? Same reason I took my fuzzbuster down :)

I'm surprised that Ann's critique of shorts doesn't apply equally to writing in print. It's childish. No worse than gripping one's writing instrument with a fist. Might as well use crayon.

Writing by hand is so.. manufacturing.

A Manuscript on a Mac or a PC still called a manuscript.. I suppose.

New horizons in blaming Bush (from AP):

" A prestigious Yale fraternity that counts both Bush presidents among its alumni is being banned from recruiting and holding activities on campus for five years after pledges were ordered to chant obscenities against women.

Yale says it has also disciplined several Delta Kappa Epsilon members and asked the fraternity's national office to suspend the chapter for five years."

As a Georgia citizen, I apologize for the dud Newt Gingrich. The man is not half as smart as he pretends to be. He seems interesting at first when spouting ideas, but he has zero ability to interact with another intelligent person's questions, other than to ditch that person as if no one else's views but his are relevant. He was a C- grade college professor that taught at a B grade college but developed a way of selling himself no matter what he ideas he has to present to do it. Watch him and see for yourself.

I've read up a bit on this handwriting issue recently and was surprised to discover that cursive is pretty much dead. Ann, although of a generation that grew up having to use cursive in school, now uses a hybrid form (print with some joined letters) -- at least here, anyway. She's not alone. For legibility, it seems that people today prefer to create their own style of print.

Of course, you can count on the NYTimes to lament the passing of any elite marker of class distinction: "The Case for Cursive," Katie Zezima.

The doodles didn't "unfold" like a flower. Take responsibility for your decisions.

Oh, so the disembodied pen proceeds as it was prescribed. No, it proceeds because you chose to put it in motion, and another page looms in the future. Why are you pretending that you don't know what you are going to draw?
