Purchase of the (yester)day.

"Intellectuals and Society": Revised and Expanded Edition [Paperback] Thomas Sowell (Amazon Associates earnings to the blog: $1.06). Maybe we should start a Thomas Sowell book club. Someone near and dear made me happy by sending me this book for Christmas. Thanks to everyone who used the Althouse Amazon portal.

Considering intellectuals I proclaim myself a psuedo. Thank you Allie Inga.

Doesn't get much better than Sowell.

Good book. His ideas have been largely ignored.

You're quite welcome unBuckley, but for what?

Did you get an order for Within Temptation? I've used it twice now, but have no idea how I'm screwing it up :(

His ideas are dangerous when crowded against bewitching fallacies.

Inga, what we, us, need to do, is figure something out.

If one uses the terms in order "but then again" and that writer had previously used the phrase "but then" I can quite certainly understand and even more appreciate the use of the terms in order "but then again."

However.

If some ... uses the phrase "but then again" without having previously used the terms in order "but then" I consider that worthy of discussion amongst us, the unpseudointellectuals.

The thing I have issues about, beyond the basics which is where I sit on the issue, not stand, is if one uses the term "but" within a proximity (but what if there is a proximity is it precisely and why) of the subsequent "but then again" is that acceptable to us intellectuals, or me if you shy away from labels, even though the "but" was indeed there, albeit lacking a "then" as it were?

Nichevo, they have boxes Skittles?

*checks*

Yes, they do.

Skittles original 2.17 oz boxes (pack of 36)

$27.26 ($0.35 per oz) ✔ Prime

In Stock

36x2.17=78.12÷27.26=2.8657÷8=0.358217

They do not tell you over there at Amazon that you get EIGHT packages of THIRTY SIX boxes of authentic unicorn poop. But it's actually closer to $0.36 cents an ounce and that's a difference of 1₵ per ounce more than the stated price, so you always have to watch out for these hucksters while shopping online especially if you're unicorn poop is strictly budgeted. But honestly, you cannot do better on unicorn poop even at the big box stores like Cosco, this is verified in comments over there.

I was really getting into you're unicorn poop as a surreal kind of Chip Ahoy unknown that had meaning beyond my ability to understand. Now I feel a little let down.

People don't say wordartist, because mostly artists are worthy of ... and also less than inspiring as they and all of us should be.

People do say wordsmith, and they mean it.

I don't mean much that I type so even I don't know the difference between things I should know what they mean (as far as I can) and what I'm hoping things a man who wants to be a star turd might say.

So I just keep saying I more and more and I hope saying I is what, more than just what I want, is what I desire and not preclude and more-than-just-accept and I see more I.

Ann, if you could read only ONE book by Sowell, you should read a 1970 work he put out entitled "Knowledge and Decisions" which he called (I find via Amazon, which lists it as a 1996 print-obviously a reprint) "my most important and comprehensive work" and which contains within the kernel of each/all of the topics which he has more fully fleshed out in his later works--a tour d'horizon if you will..

You really should read this work--it is the foundation upon which all his other works rest--and TRUST ME, it is NOT dated in the slightest insofar as the basic principles he discusses are concerned, tho, of course, in some instances more recent, better examples of a particular phenomenon he spotlights may come to mind; otherwise it reads just as fresh as if it were published yesterday morning..

Of course! He's an inauthentic black man, a cornball brother not down with the cause, if you will. Diversity is only skin-deep.

Virgil Xenophon is right. Read "Knowledge and Decisions". Outstanding book. It would be useful for your law classes.

OT, from Drudge:
"Eye experts told the New York Daily News it is likely [Hillary Clinton] has had an adhesive Fresnel prism placed on her glasses.

'If she's wearing a Fresnel prism, then she has double vision without it'...
"

Diplopia? What difference, at this point, does it make?

Went to my son's 4th grade choir concert last night.

They sang "The Water is Wide" which is an American folksong, the arrangement was by one Jay Althouse.

Paul Roberts. Another silly "we are all going to die" prophet. I'm sure he will be as successful as all the lefty doom-sayers. Especially with gems like ...

"Many associate ecological destruction with population pressure. However, the toxicity associated with mining, fracking, chemical fertilizer and GMO farming, and the adverse watershed effects of logging is turning even low density states such as Montana into an environment with ruined soil and water."

Yep. Give that idiot an NEA grant.

Except, Paul Roberts is not a lefty. In fact, he was an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in Ronald Reagan's administration and he still defends Reagan and "Reaganomics" to this day.

Paul Craig Roberts

Moreover, one's politics aside, we are undeniably exhausting the available--and limited--resources of the earth. Past cultures have gone extinct for doing the same thing in their smaller domains. This is not a fantasy or paranoid fever dream, but blunt reality.

I always valued "A Conflict of Visions," because it was a coherent explanation for such disparate anomalies.

And for something completely different, could you dial back the Amazon plugs? 1.08 for this, .96 for that? TMI, it pretty much guarantees I will never use your portal. Not that I was going to, I direct my Amazon purchases to an organization I belong to.

"Knowledge and Decisions" is a great book. I have read everything TS has written that I can get my hands on, but K and S is the best.

Add me to the chorus for "Knowledge and Decisions". I read it many years ago and still think about it.

Ann Althouse said...

"They sang "The Water is Wide" which is an American folksong, the arrangement was by one Jay Althouse."

Yes, there is a great deal of religious music arranged by Jay Althouse.

(There was also, long ago, a big opera singer named Paul Althouse.)

Chip, why would you buy your unicorn poop in small boxes? Do you intend to share?

The best price per ounce I could find was seemingly the pair of 41 ounce bags for 13 dollars and change. cheapest with prime, that is. Was I wrong?

Now I need airtight containers for freshness. Found a mason jar type deal (hinged with rubber gasket) at ikea but it's not big enough.

BTW Althouse, I wasn't asking for brownie points but to be sure I did it right.
