I used to use the Althouse portal occasionally for Amazon purchases, but since the advent of publishing purchase details here, I stopped. It's just NSA-type creepy.

Meade said...

Okay, but you do realize we are not the government, don't you?

Widmerpool said...

This is not news to General Clapper, C.F.

Plus, I'm coming to think everything the NSA has should be made public. The entire PRISM from Google to Facebook to Apple. No secret targeting. Equal rights and opportunity. Freedom of information.

My valuables are actual books. My Derrida volumes, for example. ("Okay, where's the stuff?")

That needs something other than a safe that looks like books.

So, Meade, in these tidbits are you publishing most recent cool articles bought by us Althouse readers, or suggestions you think we'd like? I had assumed you were trying, by showing actualities, to trigger some Veblenian competition in outré consumption.

Thieves often go for the books. So do yard sale and flea market shoppers. It's a common habit to hide money in books. Not sure a book safe is the best idea. While searching through the books, the thief finds the book safe and takes the whole thing. Can pick the lock later.

Better idea: Tampax box, under the bathroom sink. The ick factor will keep away any male thief. Don't you think?

Meade said...

Yes, I do, kentuckyliz. And I also think that a tampax box would be the perfect place for rh to hide his his Derrida volumes.

@Simon Kenton: It's just plain advertising really. Transparent. Cool or hot, these are the articles bought by Althouse readers through the Althouse Amazon Associates portal. It's a daily (or so) reminder of one way in which readers can support AA's blogging efforts, if they choose to. I feature one or two items I find amusing, outré, ordinary, etc. - not necessarily as recommendations but because I find them interesting. The featured item that, so far, has triggered the most additional purchases is THIS. Velenian competition? I don't know, but I ended up buying one myself - I think mine was the 27th purchase of it through our portal - and I'm very happy with it.
