Ted Cruz's wife Heidi is like him in "intensity — and they’re both extremely bright" but: “Nothing in her background remotely approached Ted’s Scalia-like conservatism."

A quote from one of Heidi Cruz's academic mentors in a NYT article titled "A Wife Committed to Cruz’s Ideals, but a Study in Contrasts to Him."

Mrs. Cruz was born in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to parents who were Seventh-day Adventist missionaries.

On this day, October 23, 2013, I hereby predict that Crack Emcee will, three year hence, be filling these very comment sections with scornful reasons to dismiss a Cruz presidency.

I couldn't understand the writer's motivation until I read this:

Ted Cruz's father Rafael, an interesting character. Wants "great transfer of wealth" into hands of evangelicals like himself.

Mrs. Cruz sounds way too normal to be connected to her husband, but maybe she agrees with her father in law.

Wait, she didn't get her bachelor's degree from Harvard, Yale or Princeton. Will Ted let her join his study group?

It gets even more interesting. Wow.

His wife may be what is considered normal, but his father.... Whoa."Dominionism? Seven Mountains Mandate"? Mormonism sounds mild compared to this.

I don't see how Ted Cruz's Senatorship is polarizing as described right off the bat in the article.

Also, from the article:

Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, tried to push Mr. Cruz into admitting that he was on his wife’s blue-chip Goldman health plan

Nothing is more blue-chip, Healthcare-wise, than the Senate's plan. I hope someone has suggested that to Durbin.

Reagan's dad was a wife-beating drunk. So was Clinton's. The patriarch of the Bush family had Nazi ties. Obama's parents were a bigamist and a communist.

It is a miracle the republic's survived, really, what with all these crazy parents. :)

@Inga,

I watched the whole video. What struck me most is the whole service is in front of a giant menorah with a star of David on the podium. Clearly, philo-semitism runs strong in this group. Probably, they are dispensationalist in their theology.

The video is so poorly edited that it's hard to tell what's going on, but it appears that Rafael Cruz is riffing on Proverbs 13:22 & on the meeting of Melchizedek & Abraham at Gen. 14:18-20**. He seems to be breaking his Christian community into "Warriors" & "Priests", and I'm not sure where that theology comes from (Paddy, you out there?). But, this is really standard Calvinist "Saints in the World" kinda stuff. The "wealth of the wicked" is clearly meant to be understood metaphorically, and is used as such in Proverbs. And every time someone uses the word "dominion" in a sermon, it doesn't mean they're a "Dominionist". It's a good biblical word.

Do not ever get your news on any Christian topic from Alternet. They haven't a clue. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad over this stuff it really helps to actually try & understand the the theology of the group in question. I had to work at it. You can, too. Do you think that coming from my over-intellectualized French Catholic background I have some natural theological sympathy for these people? Not in the least, but, they, too, have something to say.

**A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.

When the lefties tell the blacks to leave their "benighted faith" at home or just not showing up at voting booth, then I'll believe just how much the Left worries about separation of church & state.

To me, American Protestantism is just a never ended carnival of weirdness (he said, before going to mass to chew on Jesus). Cruz's bozos are just part of the show. And, since wives are now fair game, did Cruz's wife ever get a high-paying job at a hospital that was just created JUST as her husband gained some political power and when she quit, they didn't fill her position again?

Did Cruz' dad have multiple wives? Was his mom a Communist who left her child with her mother because she was too much of a flake to raise him herself?

Did Cruz smoke pot and do other harder drugs in college? Why did Dershowitz call him off-the-charts brilliant and why has, LITERALLY, no professor (or anybody who knew him in college) ever verified Obama's brilliance as a student or as an instructor?

Well, it is all relevant. Never did understand all the smoke, praying to graven images, priests having sex with little boys instead of getting married. Don't they read the Bible? (ok, their/your Bible is a bit different from ours, for example deleting the Commandment against graven images - but not as much as the Mormons who apparently added stuff to theirs that predicts their faith).

And that was arguably what the Reformation was about - getting back to scripture. Much of the theological difference between mainline Protestantism and Roman Catholicism was the rejection of the latter's sacred traditions by the former when they conflicted with scripture. Of course, Protestantism has long been a big tent, where the only unifying requirements seem to be a belief in the Trinity, and a rejection of Papal authority.

Kirk Parker, I agree that the left hates Western Civilization but I'm not convinced most of them hate themselves. I believe the separation lies at a much deeper spiritual level.

For me, one of the strongest signs that Jesus is exactly whom he said he was is the hatred that he and those who follow him engender in those who have rejected him. How could anyone who is alive spiritually fail to love a being who said:

John 3:16-18
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
NIV

However, as Paul discovered, there are plenty of haters.
2 Cor 2:14-17

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. 15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?

Two things that puzzle me:

1. Why does Inga act like quoting the Bible is the same as hate speech?

2. Do pro-regressives not understand that the vast majority of our Founding Fathers were deeply religious and it is their Christian faith that informed their desire to keep government from declaring which religions are "allowed"?

How is that Ted Cruz's personal faith (if you could even know such a thing) would lead to a theocracy but the prayers said by patriots to open the first Congress -- and every one since --- has not lead to a theocracy?

How can idiots compare Islam -- which explicitly supplants government with religion -- to Christianity in all its myriad forms, and even form a tentative link to the same outcome? Christians are told (in that horribly hate-filled Bible!) to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" -- which is commanded about the exact subject of taxation and government and how we ought to behave. Is Inga so ignorant as to not understand such a simple concept?

Kirk Parker said...

Inga,

Do you like to argue just for the sake of arguing? I never said that numerically the largest number of victims weren't Jews, just that some early proto-fundies were also among the victims and (by implication) most definitely NOT among the perpetrators.

Illuninati said...

Inga said:
"So, if one doesn't believe in your brand of Christianity Illuninati, one isn't Christian enough and doesn't love Jesus? Sounds like something Glenn Beck said about Obama."

Inga, you don't know anything about "my brand" of Christianity. The fact that I am defending fundamentalist Christians doesn't mean I agree with everything they teach. The same goes with the Pentacostals. The Mormons are an entirely different kettle of fish, but for the most part they also have a strong commitment to traditional Western Civilization.

Inga also said:
"Oh those poor Jews, they must be doomed. Repent Jews! Accept Jesus as your personal savior!"

Some of the strongest supporters of the Jewish state are Christian Fundamentalists, especially the dispensationalists. There are some Christians who believe Jews must accept Jesus as their personal savior to be saved just like everyone else, so what? Other Christians believe that Jews already worship the same true God and will play an important role in God's plan for the future.

Inga said:
"Those darn Fundamentalists, just out to save your soul. Muslim Fundamentalists got their foothold in secular countries, guess what happened?

But Christian Fundamentalists would not go back to the days of the Inquisition!"

The Inquisition was part of the Roman Catholic church. It has nothing to do with Fundamentalist Christians at all. If anything they were the victims of the inquisition. People similar to Fundamentalist Christians were so committed to religious freedom that they were willing to die for their right to worship God according to their consciences. Anyone who bothers to read the documents at Vatican II which is the official doctrine of the Roman Catholic church will find a strong statement about freedom of religion. The Inquisition was a long time ago and the Catholic church has moved on. In other words, outside the fevered imaginations of the left, there is no evidence that Christians desire to return to the Inquisition.

Inga, your statement about Muslim fundamentalists does not make sense if you understand Islam. There are Christian Fundamentalists who are happy to call themselves Fundamentalists. They are also committed to religious liberty. To the best of my knowledge, there are no Muslim Fundamentalists. Fundamentalist is a term which Muslims do not usually apply to themselves. Indeed, some Muslims believe that it is an insult to Islam to talk about Muslim Fundamentalists. Here is Erdogan's assessment:
"Turkey is not a country where moderate Islam prevails. This expression is wrong. The word Islam is uninflected, it is only Islam. If you say moderate Islam, then an alternative is created, and that is immoderate Islam. As a Muslim, I can't accept such a concept."
By making a false classification of Muslims, it is easy to overlook the truth about Islam. The vast majority of Muslims take the Koran as the exact words of God. That is standard theology among both the Sunni Muslims (including the Sufis) and the Shiite Muslims.

Inga, you didn't offer any positive evidence that the left is morally superior to anyone. The crimes of the left far exceed the crimes committed by the Inquisition both in sheer numbers of victims and in the terrible societies for which those victims were slaughtered. Christians have acknowledged that in hindsight there were problems with the Inquisition and have made theological adjustments. Leftists have not accepted responsibility for the massive volume of murders by their fellow left/neo-pagans/Marxists and show no sign that they have changed their basic belief structure as a result. Because the left has no objective standard against which to measure their morality they are subject to a morality through the mimetic process which is not conducive to moral reflection or progress.

This is why conservatism and Republicans are in decline. Just read Illuninati. 'Nuff said.

Progressive churches have been "emerging" for a hundred and fifty years. They always die out.

When you accept that it is the business of the state to provide for all earthly needs and wants, God is superfluous.

"The craziness has escalated to such levels that some actually use the terms "left/neo pagan/Marxists" with a straight face."

In referring to neo-pagans I am not necessarily describing any particular religious belief. In some cases, I use the term pagan in the following sense:
" one who has little or no religion and who delights in sensual pleasures and material goods : an irreligious or hedonistic person"
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pagan

Many on the left are proud Pagans with Pagan religious beliefs, especially their reverence for mother Earth, Gaia. Another religious group of Pagans were the Nazis. Hitler believed in God, just not the Christian God. Marxism is officially atheistic but in many ways serves as a substitute religion. What all these groups have in common is that they despise traditional Christianity and reject long established Judeo-Christian morality.

The question is why they hate a religion so passionately which was instrumental in the foundation of Western Civilization? On the other hand, when leftists discuss Islam you find understanding and respect.

They can pick on the papists and the protestants with all the impunity in the world. Progs fear no retaliation from groups who really do practice turning the other cheek.

"Respect" for Islam is rooted in fear: piss off the wrong Muslim and you may get your head sawn off, with the video posted on Facebook.

I looked up the site Inga linked to by Frank Schaeffer. It has been years since I read a book by his father,Francis Schaeffer, but in the book I read he came across as a highly intelligent reasoned man. I have no knowledge about the internal workings of his organization and don't really care. I do wonder if the father lived long enough recognize how his son would turn on him when he was not able to defend himself and degrade his legacy?

I think this statement by Frank neatly sums what I have been saying about the left:
"The root cause of the shutdown is the evangelical religious right. Intransigent theology, myth-based literalism of biblical interpretation and fact-free politics, crafted as a reaction to social change is at the heart of the fiasco we’re witnessing. It’s not about the economy stupid, it’s all about our embattled competing views of God."

Here Schaefer accuses the other side of the debate of operating a "fact-free politics" yet his statement is heavy on character attacks against his opponents but short on facts.

1. From the right, the battle was over a new entitlement program, not over religion. Whatever Ted Cruz's personal faith might be was irrelevant to the political issue being worked out. One of Ted Cruz's early and persistent supporters is Mark Levin, a Jew - hardly a Fundamentalist Christian. However, as Frank has demonstrated, from the standpoint of the left this is indeed a religious battle. Their primary interest in changing society is apparently as a method to weaken traditional Christian beliefs.

2. "Intransigent theology." The left hates traditional theology which will not bend to their will. They are on a religious crusade against traditional Christianity and will do everything they can to break it.

3. "myth-based literalism of biblical interpretation"

4."It’s not about the economy stupid, it’s all about our embattled competing views of God" According to the right it is about the economy with the miserably slow recovery under the Democrats, but apparently to the left the entire struggle is a religious war which they have declared on traditional Christian believers and ultimately on Christianity itself.

Thank-you Inga for linking to this article which makes my point so vividly. As your article so vividly articulates, the left is not just a political movement. It is a religious movement which is determined to destroy Biblical Christianity. This article casts a spotlight on the neo-pagan religious movement within the left about which I have been posting.
