The President of the United States signals his vigilance to the needs of the nation in these troubled times.

"Obama reveals Final Four bracket picks."

"I know these are not imaginative picks, but I think they’re the right ones," said Obama, assuring us of his stability and wisdom as we move forward into what some say is if not a resurgence of the Cold War then something chilly that reminds them of the Cold War.

They say Putin laughed at Obama, but it is Obama who laughs at Putin, now, with this masterful show of attending to the frippery of a college sports tournament.

Perhaps he is better at guessing the outcome of sporting events versus the moves of Putin.

Then again, one may be better served by picking four other teams.

I assume you're posting this knowing it will climb to over 300 comments while you enjoy the day sightseeing...

And yes there was a time where it would have seemed ironic that a president who doesn't find the need to attend a National security counsel meeting, Certainly wouldn't delegate the picking of his final 4 to subordinates. And make the picking a media event...

But nowadays its just so commonplace that it's just a yawn from me....

When the news of the Armada hoving into sight reached Francis Drake, it is said he calmly acknowledged the message and continued to his game of boules... historians so dearly love to deflate this tale.

It seems that the real reason Drake was unhurried at the news was the time of day -- no need to rush since it would be useless to try a sortie from Portsmouth while the tide was high -- and not some cocksure bravdo. Spain was a threat to England. Everybody knew it. To treat the Duke of Medina-Sedonia's fleet with nonchalant confidence would not have inspired Drake's men; quite the reverse, it would have made them think their leader wasn't playing with a full deck.

The same is true here. Obama may think he's playing his mind game in major league style, but if that's true he's even more of a failure than I took him for yesterday. He's not fooling me, nor is he fooling the American public, nor our allies (what remains of them), nor our enemies. And he's certainly not got the best of Putin with this pathetic display, especially since Obama will soon have to crawl like a supplicant to prevent Russia from sinking his Iranian "disarmament" initiative with all hands. Unless there's plenty of sarcasm dripping from her comment that I haven't detected, it appears the only person Obama has fooled is Althouse.

Yeah, I can't get too worked up about this. He's done it every year. And he actually seems to know what he's talking about. Of course, his Final Four matches mine, though I have Florida and Louisville in the National Title game with Florida being victorious this time around...so maybe I'm being generous.

The way Obama's year has been going so far, he may have jinxed all four of the teams.

And Louisville has to get past the Shockers, who remember that last year they were up double digits before eventually losing to the Cardinals, plus a very good Michigan team, so there's that.

Meanwhile Scott Walker has predicted a final four berth for the Badgers. If that happens then the guy has to be a serious contender for 2016.

If Obama were really as masterful as Althouse suggests, he would double down on laughing at Putin -- showing all the world that he who laughs last laughs best, and that O is always the guy who laughs last -- by running off next to divide his time between Dem fundraisers, TV comedy shows and golf tournies.

St. George:

It won't matter if he raises marginal tax rates. The percentage of GDP that can be collected by taxes, regardless of the marginal rate, varies little.

People will not stand still whilst the government tax farmer readies the tax shears. Behaviors change because people respond to incentives. Granted that means economically inefficient distribution of resources and a net loss to society.

the hard, cold facts of reality will always overcome those well-laid plans of politicians. The ironclad laws of economics, invariable as human nature, will not yield to the whims of our "king of a god" president.

So we can remain peaceful in the knowledge Obama must fail. And then work like hell to keep the costs of his failure (personal and ideological) to a minimum.

[Al] Sharpton said that Obama "has taken 92 days of vacation since he was sworn in," compared to 367 for President George W. Bush at the same point in his presidency. While this discrepancy is explained by the fact that Bush often worked from a family home in Texas whereas Obama has no equivalent family retreat, Sharpton has correctly cited data from the leading authority, CBS News’ Mark Knoller. The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information, so we rate the statement Mostly True.

jacksonjay, if you think life is a straight line, from your mouth to reality, then so be it but I don't. I see a man operating in a hothouse and doing what he can with it. Corrupt? Not at all.

Look, at the very least, you should be able to admit you're hostile to him - shit, I was. That's not a good place to be if you're trying to analyze his good points. And it's definitely not a good place to be if one of his good points is stopping those who would be hostile to him. You simply don't have the perspective to see the good.

It's Obama Derangement Syndrome - just like Bush got, no better or worse. Actually, worse, because he's black, and white dudes especially should be checking themselves.

And I think both you and Althouse are wrong. Obama is doing what he’s been doing since 2008, running for election. Oh, sure, he’s term limited, but his entire presidency has been to pretend that he’s not really involved with the government. He’s the one who reads about the actions of the government in the papers. He’s the one who refers reporters to secretary of this or secretary of that when asked about policy. He’s the one who gives speeches about what’s wrong with the country as if he has not been in office for the past five years. So ignoring what’s going on in Ukraine is perfectly in line with his pattern of action.
He’s also aware his base – and that includes both the underclass, the press and the denizens of academia - doesn't give a rat’s ass about Crimea, Ukraine, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt or any other foreign activity. They care about government benefits like food stamps, they care about funding for ever more expensive education, and they care about attracting an audience for their shows (which explains CNN’s wall-to-wall coverage of the missing airlines). And they care about who’s going to win the Final Four.

So Obama plays to their interests. And if it means that Putin re-establishes the Soviet Union while Obama plays to his base, that’s OK with him. The US isn't going to be invaded during his term and meanwhile he’s got free government housing, a great plane, all the money in the world and the press, academia and the support of superannuated teeny boppers who still think he gives a shit about them. They actually believe he wants to take care of these issues because that’s what they expect a president to do. Even after five years they will still refuse believe the evidence that’s right before their eyes. They will go to their graves denying the evidence that the Obama presidency is just a great gig for him and his wife and that’s it. Period.

Except Walker is working and is making his state better whereas the President is acting like a bystander instead of the leader of the free world but other than that, it is just the same.

Admit it, if GWB was currently President and everything up to today was EXACTLY the same, we would have OWS camped outside the WH fences, the nightly news would be 24/7 America is failing and people are out of work and the world is exploding and our "leader" is playing golf and the wife & kids are jet-setting off to another way-too-expensive vacation. You KNOW that is the truth but because we have a "D" President (oh, and he is black) he gets a total pass. He wishes he were as competent as Jimmy Carter! With his experience he had no business on the ticket, no business getting elected, and no business getting re-elected. The only think keeping him in office now is Biden would be worst. By every measure except fund-raising the man is a complete and total failure as a President AND the color of his skin has nothing to do with it. If you can't see that, you are a racist, a racist of low expectations because you grade him on who he is and not on what he has actually done.

It's policy that matters. But you can't see that because to you it's skin color as a one-size-fits-all explanation. But it's policy that's driving Obama's term as president to further failure. It was policy that proved Carter a miserable failure. It was policy that made Nixon a failure. It was policy that made LBJ a failure. Hoover and FDR failed too, because of policy.

It's not party.
It's not race.
It's policies that work or don't work.

Tho, he is following through on the his "divide and conquer" campaign promise. Scott Walker is the most polarizing figure in the history of Wisconsin politics. So if you think making the state an uglier place to live is "better", then I guess you're right after all.

Todd said...

Scott Walker is the most polarizing figure in the history of Wisconsin politics.

I guess so, when it is your ox getting gored. When it was the other side, there was nothing polarizing about it cause you were getting what you wanted.

Also, a large part of who gets tagged with the "polarizing" label depends on who the press tells you is polarizing. The President isn't polarizing, he is mainstream. Nancy P. isn't polarizing, she is mainstream. Harry R. isn't polarizing, he is mainstream. Don't matter what percentage of the population feels they are not being represented or supported, if the press is on your side "nothing to see here".

Walker is polarizing because he bucked the unions. Didn't matter that they were bankrupting the state, HE is polarizing.

Anonymous said...

The reason Scott Walker is so polarizing is simple: He vowed to behave as such ("divide and conquer" were his exact words) and it is the one campaign promise he actually followed through on.

Anonymous said...

...show me a video of any other politician (Dem, Repub, Green, Libertarian, Independent, or any party) telling their donors that if they are elected their plan is to "divide and conquer" the people they represent and I'll say the same thing about them as well.

Are you honestly suggesting that if Person A does wrong then Person B is without sin? If not, then your comment makes no sense at all.

Fact of the matter is that Scott Walker said, on video, that his plan was to divide the people of Wisconsin. That is flat-out polarizing, no matter what anyone else does.
