"I am going to squeeze every last little bit of opportunity to help make this world a better place over these last two years."

Said Barack Obama, responding to one part of a 2-part question from CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta at a press conference yesterday. The part of the question he answered was: "Are you running out of time? How much time do you have left? And what do you make of the notion that you’re now a lame duck?" And he really didn't even answer that question. He turned it into the question: What are you going to do with the rest of your time?

The other part of the question, the first part, was: "your party rejected you in these midterms...  they did not want you out on the campaign trail in these key battleground states. How do you account for that?" Obama blabbed so long on the reframed second part of the question that, I guess, he hoped we wouldn't notice that he never got around to that. But what would he have said? Those loser Democrats have their loss to themselves, so don't smear their loserhood onto me. I am the one the American people embraced heartily twice. They love me.

We can only imagine what he might have said and what he really thinks. I pulled out the quote I put in the post title, because I found it appealing. I read it out loud to Meade, and he latched onto the word "squeeze": "I do not like him squeezing and getting into my life. He can try to get onto the track of making my life better, but that's not his job, to make my life better."

I always get Meade's approval before blogging a quote of his, and this time the quote-check triggered another quote that I couldn't get verbatim. I've got to paraphrase: Obama's policies were rejected in the election, what was rejected was the Democratic Party's excessive intervention into the lives of the people, so Obama needs to get back to the proper role of the President, Commander in Chief and executing the laws of the United States.

Squeeze has another meaning more suited to Obama -- he will squeeze being president in among other things like golf.

Appealing, appalling, po-tay-to, po-tah-to, let's call the whole thing off.

I have a hard time taking anything he says seriously. His idea of a better world doesn't match up much with mine anyway. I expect he'll do whatever pleases him and salves his ego.

"get back to" ?

6 years on the job and Obama still has no idea what it means to be president. He is incapable of learning.

Obama has, from the get go, always maintained his ideas and actions have superior value.
Has there ever been anyone as wise as Obama?

Bill Clinton gets $750,000 for speaking fees.
Jimmy Carter gets $75,000.

Which one of them thinks the world is a better place?
Last chance to squeeze some opportunity.

Only in his own mind, Fandor. Oh...and maybe Valerie Jarretts.

I'm a big fan of cargo cults, it's an amazing phenomenon. When you are first introduced to it, it seems so ridiculous that it's hard to believe it's real, but then you start to notice cargo cult thinking everywhere you look.

Barack Obama is a good example with his "make this world a better place." There are a stock set of phrases that reasonable intelligent people use. So he sprinkles his speeches with those statements. Reasonable intelligent people say them, he's saying them, therefore he's a reasonable intelligent person.

But they sound a little weird, a little off and unsatisfying. That's because they have no actual meaning to him, they're just signifiers that he's a reasonable intelligent person and nothing more.

It's all about him, not making the world a better place. perks and worship...

Going into the next election, we need to force candidates to address what it means to be President and the Oath:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

I know I speak for most every Vet in saying that we understood exactly what our oath meant:
I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God

When life gives you opportunity, make lemonade.

No, that's not it.

When life makes you a duck, squeeze out opportunity.

When life gives you ducks, make pate.

Something like that.

Personally, I think the President should right another biography.

I am hopeful the President and Congress will work together for the benefit of the Country. Obama should want to do this if he wants any kind of (positive) legacy. And Republicans should want to point to some accomplishments in two years when 2016 rolls around.

However, the whole lot of 'em haven't much history of doing what I want, so maybe I'm just delusional.

Obama has become an idiot. Perhaps psychotic.

In that case, the insiders must behave as President Wilson's wife did after Wilson's stroke. Which means, I suppose, that Michelle will be forcing all of us to eat fresh fruit and lots of raw vegetables while she gorges on Kobi beef with her psychotic husband. And ignore Putin. And Iran. And ISIS/ISIL. And become ravingly anti-Semitic.

I hope you meant "reasonably intelligent" (although that has become debatable).

Obama is the leader of the John Birch Left.

Great, you can start with this sebaceous cyst.

I'm happy to have them all work together for the good of the country, I'm just afraid Obama's definition of good is different than mine.

tim maguire said...

Hi gerry. No, I meant reasonable intelligent. As in, he is a reasonable person and he is an intelligent person. "Reasonably intelligent" would not fit with my larger point.

Yeah, but that's not the fun part.

This idea of "working together" is absurd. These folks didn't get elected because they promised "to work together".

The Dems are on the wrong side of almost every issue...Immigration, Obamacare, Keystone Pipeline...and they can see the results of Obama's and the democrats "big government" and are unwilling to embrace the suck.

Passing a bunch of compromise bills will not help the GOP...it would be fatal. These Republican's did not get elected because they promised to "Work with the Democrats"...they promised to stop Obama. Time to do that.

They need to send bill after bill to Obama's desk. Let him veto it. But this Democratic bullshit of GOP obstruction is over.

In that statement is the essence of why he's failed as president.
"Make the world a better place"
He was elected to make the United States of America a better place. Yet from day one, or even before, when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, he's wanted to transcend the meager post of president of the U.S. .
Had he set out with the objective of making us a better country, the world might have in fact benefited.
His sights have always been set on something out of reach.
In the future we as a country would do well to elect Americans as president, natural born, or not.

Putin sees Obama is a Lame Duck.

Expect North Korea to act up.

Expect ISIS to keep mass murdering and expanding their territory.

And meanwhile Obama will keep waving his 'pen' and saying he is doing something.

I do worry about his mental health (not cause I worry about Obama but cause I worry about America.)

As he becomes more more a lame duck and people stop taking his phone calls, nor listening to his speeches, nor take him seriously, such a narcissistic guy will go NUTS.

That's a great insight. I've seen this in my working life as well. Managers of minority and/or working-class backgrounds who ape the phrases of seminar-speak devised by their white middle-class peers, but clearly have little understanding of what they mean or how to apply them. Like Obama, they tend to cruise on plausible self-presentation and bullshit.

There will always be those "of the faith" that will, till the bitter end, take his calls, hang on his every word, and get that special tingle when he talks. One hopes that this will be an ever shrinking one.

1: Get Joe Biden to resign.

2: Appoint Rick Perry as VP

3: Resign

Obama has done nothing to make the word a better place these past six year; he has made it a net worse place...protecting torturers and war criminals and then joining their ranks, protecting the greatest thieves of the public's wealth the world has ever known, (the barons of Wall Street and the big banks, who are so loathesome only George Grosz could do them pictorial justice), shoring up the wealthy minority and insuring the further immiseration of everyone else.

I'm reminded of the old Kris Kristofferson line to Jon Peters--then the hairdresser to and soon to be husband of Barbra Streisand. Kristofferson and Streisand were working on a movie together. There was tension with Peters.

Kristofferson finally told Peters, "Any time I want any s#it from you, I'll just squeeze your head."

Well Obama--you're looking like Jon Peters to most of the populace. We'll let you know when we want to squeeze your head.
