At least you didn't order cherry ice cream, which might have attracted the pie-eating bear.

But I'm miffed. Moments after I discerned today's theme, you post something about mocha ice cream.

So I finished To Kill a Mockingbird and Atticus was already a racist in that novel. He just strongly believed in the "White Man's Burden" as it used to be called and tried very hard to act decently within that belief system. But if racism is to believe that another race is inferior, Finch was a racist to the core. "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird, an innocent little songbird that don't harm no-one." I paraphrase, and "Its a sin to kill a crippled nigger" for pretty much the same reason.

BTW, I don't like using that word, but it is hard to discuss the novel without using its language.

He said a couple of times in the book that there was nothing lower than to "cheat a negro." Why? Because he figured that they were stupid and innocent and that it was taking unfair advantage.

You're an early adopter. I'm running XP, being an IT pro.

My lovely sailboat English Rose will be on Lake Mendota next year if all goes as planned. And then the Apostle Islands with a stop off in Ashland to lay a surfboard fin at the grave of Wisconsinite Tom Blake the inventor of the modern surfing lifestyle and the surfboard fin. Can't wait.

What a beautiful view. Our grandson was there last month for a football camp, and
he decided this was his first choice for college. Sandy and I certainly enjoyed the two years
we spent there. Winters were not quite so nice, but that made the spring and
summer even better.

Isn't that what the sign above the entrance to Hell says now that they took down the "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" sign?

The clap is free, too.

@Original Mike, back when I was in the service most of the guys who got the clap actually paid for the privilege.

So the clap is more like Windows 8.

I have Windows 7 with XP hidden in it somehow so that it takes over for old programs that won't run on 7.
The computer spook at the fix-it shop set it up for me, and it works fine.

Would it surprise anyone to learn that twice as many White people have been killed by cops this year as Black people?

Gahrie said...

According to the FBI, in 2012, Blacks committed 38.5% of violent crime in the U.S..

According to the U.S. Census bureau, in 2012, Blacks made up 14.2% of the population.

In 2012, whites committed 58.7% of the violent crimes. Whites were 63% of the population in 2012.

sane_voter said...

Gahrie,

That stat of white crime includes Hispanics. So the true white rate is much lower.

No, next question. Between Planned Parenthood and young black males, the black problem may be solved in a few years.

Those are some interesting statistics Gahrie. Since the only differing factor between the two groups is the color of skin, are you suggesting there is something genetic involved?

Nope. Something cultural.

Are you just parroting silly propaganda for effect, or do you really believe that?

are you suggesting there is something genetic involved?

Gasp! Incitement to Thoughtcrime!

Of course something genetic is involved. Everything is genetic, including the personalities that average out to a culture.

Then I think you will be waiting forever. My understanding is that Windows 10 is doing away with the concept of service packs and versioned releases, and will be pushing everything as automatically installed updates.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea to wait a bit, to let others deal with any problems in the initial install. But on my home computer I will probably switch early. I will ensure that I have everything backed up before I do.

What's the worst that can happen?

Huh? No, he'll be waiting six months. At which point, he can install Windows 10, and it will immediately download the latest updates, fixing all the problems that the early adopters have found over the intervening six months.

Ignorance is Bliss said...

If he wishes to wait six months, he can wait six months, that is a fine strategy. My point was that there is no service pack due in 6 months. If he waits for a service pack, he is waiting for something that won't come.

...any form of Windows is infinitely better than the old DoS systems non-Apple computers used to run.

Please, it's DOS. DoS is conventional for "Denial of Service," a kind of hacker operation intended to disable a network or webpage.

People often use the acronym DOS to refer to Microsoft's first operating system, but it's actually a generic term meaning Disk Operating System, i.e. an operating system that can be retrieved and loaded from a magnetic disk, quite a trick back in the Core Age. The earliest digital electronic computers like the ENIAC had no operating systems. A program had exclusive use of the hardware while it ran. Just to get the system started called for a laborious process of manually setting switches. Later companies like IMB and Univac came up with "job control systems" which provided highly automated tools for loading user programs and data sequentially, but the JCL, as this was known at IBM couldn't start the computer from any stored source. It was a chicken and egg situation - how could one start a computer from instructions stored on a disk if the computer had to already running in order to read from a disk? The problem was likened to Baron von Munchausen flying to the moon by tugging on his own bootstraps. The solution to this dilemma was starting the computer by adding functionality layer by layer until the computer became operational for the user. This was called bootstrapping in honor of the plucky baron, later shortened to booting - so now you know what you're talking about when you say something like, "Crap, my box boots so so damned slowly!"

There are many kinds of Disk Operating Systems, some fully compatible with software written for MS-DOS, some not. When Apple introduced disk storage and retrieval with the Apple ][ it came with Apple DOS, which eventually morphed into Apple GS/OS, which was DOS with an integrated graphical shell - basically Wozniak's answer to the Macintosh System Software. It looked a lot like the Mac GUI, but was conceptually more like Windows 3.11

I was happy with XP. Microsoft stopped supporting it. Compatibility mode doesn't cut it.

I actually keep an old DOS machine and a XP machine around to run my favorite old games from time to time.

I liked XP as well. When Microsoft stops supporting 7 I'll "upgrade" to the newest OS, which will probably by Windows 12 by then and I'll have skipped the headaches of switching to 10 and 11.

Typo: IMB! ha!

Back when I was in Boca Raton, I'd occasionally see that typo in emails and memos. When one of those crossed my desk I threatened to trash it immediately on grounds I didn't work for International Mulch Bags.

My understanding is that Windows 10 is doing away with the concept of service packs and versioned releases, and will be pushing everything as automatically installed updates.

MS is playing this one very close to the chest. There are thousands of IT administrators right now who have no idea what Win10 is going to do to their mission critical applications and whether their admin skills accumulated over the last few decades will become so much flotsam. It's really cruel to foist such poorly documented crap down the customer's throats. Computers that come with Win10 pre-installed are going to have Secure Boot locked down tight as Dick's hatband (BTW, I learned that "tight as Dick's hatband" refers to Richard II, a king noted for his egotism.) This will make even routine admin tasks unnecessarily difficult.

I have no evidence but I suspect that MS is aping Apple again with their new deployment model. With the first appearance of OS X Apple moved to a model of incremental improvement. Since OS X 10.9 (aka Mavericks) Apple has distributed the OS free of charge, relying on apps and content pipes like iTunes and iBooks for revenue. Over the last few years a pattern has developed. Every June at the WWDC a new release of the OS is announced and previewed. By late October or early November the new OS X is made available as a free download from the App Store. A few months later an update is released - in the case of Mavericks it was called 10.9.3, and for Yosemite it was 10.10.3, making one wonder what happened to the dot-2 version. Then a new major release is announced followed by another update (10.9.4 and 10.10.4 respectively) which among other things gets the computer ready for a smooth upgrade to the new release. Apple announced OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) last June. I'm running the developer beta now. By mid-October I expect the production release to appear in the App Store, followed by an update (OS x 10.11.4?) next January or February, to be followed by yet another announced release next June.

I have a feeling Microsoft will following this pattern with Windows 10. I also have a feeling IT administrators are going to have to become hackers just to keep their legacy systems working as expected.

Regarding the pie-eating bear, I did an image search on "pie-eating bare" in order to link to a visual pun. I expected to find a shot of some nudist having an innocent pie-eating contest - you know, bulgy, hairy, saggy, ever-so-not-sexy nudists wolfing pies in pursuit of a worthless trinket or something... Well, I didn't find any. I found, well... stuff I'm not going to link to.

I did find this, which is cute but only refers to muffins and jello, no pies.

You didn't label the groups according to their culture, rather by color of their skin. Does culture = color of skin?

Anonymous said...

do you really believe that?

Yes I do really believe that he labeled one group as "black" and the other as "white" with nothing else whatsoever to differentiate between the groups. Only factor was color of skin.

Do you really believe that he did not?

Gahrie said...

Does culture = color of skin?

In many cases...yes.

It wasn't a White man who invented the term "acting White" to describe minorities who were being successful.

Anonymous said...

In many cases...yes.

Okay. If culture is based on the color of skin and color of skin is based on genetics then (by saying it's a cultural issue) you are saying that there is a genetic reason why blacks commit more crimes than whites.

You just took a slightly longer road to get there than some others do.

Anonymous said...

It wasn't a White man who invented the term "acting White" to describe minorities who were being successful.

Do you actually know the name and race of the person who invented that term or are you making an assumption and presenting it as a fact?

Fuck you. I am not a racist.

You explain the numbers then asshole.

I know, I know ..White racism....but now explain why Black immigrants are more successful than native Blacks. Explain why Asians are more successful than Whites.

Asshole.

Anonymous said...

Fuck you

Is that your little way of saying you were making an assumption about who it was (and thus the color of their skin) that invented the term "acting White", and you're pissed off for being called out on it?

You explain the numbers then asshole.

You're the one who presented them, with only the color of skin as the differing factor between the two groups. If those numbers have nothing at all to do with genetics, then why are you using only a genetic factor?
