"Martin O'Malley is trying to catch fire in California."

Headline at the L.A. Times.

Why not? Everything else is on fire in California, and there's no water to put it out.

ADDED: "California Wildfires: Can Burning Marijuana Fields Get You High?"

High enough to get excited about Martin O'Malley?

I'd like to like O'Malley, but so far I haven't been able to manage it.

Our Government at work, doubling down on failed fire management policies.

"What we're getting now are much more intense fires because of all those years of suppression," said John Freemuth, a Boise State University professor and a public lands expert. "Those kinds of intense fires are usually not allowed to burn."

O'Malley appears to be a man with no purpose. His best bet is if Hillary crashes and burns, and suddenly the Dems have to look for another alternative to Sanders.

@Brando, That was Plan B for him 6 months ago..

Plan A is to be the Hill's VP. Which is why butter doesn't melt in his mouth when he speaks of the Queen...

Sounds like a long shot idea--what could he possibly have to add to her ticket? A white guy who now has black people pissed at him, and is too far to the left for moderates?

The amateur bar band musician who was once the Governor of Baltimore is pretty knowledgeable about things catching on fire.

He was a failure in his last job. Why would we trust him with the country?

Can burning marijuana fields get you high? Back when I was a Vietnam draftee there was a story circulating about a master sergeant who was ordered to destroy a quantity of confiscated marijuana. How do you destroy things when you're in the army? You burn it, of course. Came back high as a kite. Apocryphal? Maybe. But during the Vietnam War sergeants were not uniformly of a high IQ.

A question for the Althouse readers. Which state would you nominate as being worse managed than California? Are there any?

O'Malley famously decreased crime as Baltimore's mayor by changing how police reported crimes to the public.

If you want that sort of thing, he's your man.

I'd rather elect any random piece of roadkill than him, to any office of responsibility and trust. While the carrion smell would offend, nothing else about it would be as bad as what he would do in office.

What jobs did Obama do successfully before getting elected to the presidency? Sure, he's made a mess of things but he established the precedent that actually having experience is not a requirement, at least for Democrats.

Anything is possible if you lower your standards far enough. Like the old saying, "Figures don't lie but liars can figure." Manipulating government statistics is a long standing practice. With over 90 million working age Americans not working, does anyone really believe the unemployment rate is just over 5%?

New York is a pretty close second. My criteria would be how poorly run their government is even taking into account natural advantages that the state already had (e.g., big tech sector and entertainment in CA, big finance in NYC), which sometimes help mask just how crappily run the state is. Maryland had poor leadership under O'Malley and a lousy business climate, but this was largely papered over by the fact that the DC suburbs have a lot of wealth and growth, so the unemployment rate is lower than it would otherwise be if say DC were a few hundred miles further south.

Considering how we're getting a growing glut of retirees I think a far more useful figure is the labor force participation rate. The 5% number looks terrific, and would be terrific in earlier times, but what matters far more is labor hours out of the entire population. That's one of the reasons our deficits are still high and entitlements are becoming a bigger problem.

I hope he wears shorts so he can fit in. We're not part of the futsy Midwestern/fashionable North East baptist/bootlegger coalition.

You couldn't metaphorically dip O'Malley in gasoline and napalm and get that result.
