"An hour before the start of Game 1 of the World Series, the first report about the death of Royals starting pitcher Edinson Volquez’s father Daniel began circulating."

"It came courtesy of a radio station sports director in Volquez’s native Dominican Republic. Shortly afterwards it was confirmed by two ESPN Deportes reporters. But as Volquez threw the first pitch of the game, it was still unclear whether or not he actually knew about his father’s death...."

So the News Organizations weren't sure how they could craft a story of Volquez's pitching in game 1? Pitcher Edison Volquez bravely soldiered on after learning of his father's death just hours before the game... They had to leave such an awesome lede on the floor?

Pity.

Soap opera.

Depending on how far apart they are and how fast you're travelling, the reports might have started circulating after the game. Is this a time-like death or a space-like death.

Who won?

Royals 5 to 4 in 14 innings. But that's not important.

Royals kept the Mets at bay for 5 extra innings ncluding 9 stikeouts. Mets continuosly managed to pitch out of trouble before the Royals finally pushed one across in the 14th. Volquez pitched a very respectable game. But that's not important.

So only Evil Fox bothered even to think about the impact their reporting would have on the man?

It was quite a game. Glad I stayed up to watch it. KC had some defensive lapses, but was good at getting their first hurt on base. The Mets got out of a few jams. Fun to watch. Very sorry for Volques' loss.

There is still baseball being played? My god, it is almost November!

Personally, I liked the redemption story for Eric Hosmer the best. The Gold Glove firstbaseman made a Buckneresque error that allowed the lead run to score in the eighth inning, but was bailed out of the potential goat role by Alex Gordon's game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth, and then Hosmer hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in the 14th to end the game.

Familia blew it with his quick pitch to Gordon. He threw him a meatball and Gordon did what anyone in MLB would do with a pitch right down the middle.

Hosmer should send Familia a basket of cookies.

mccullough,

Maybe he did. Maybe Gordon did as well. Look. I was at game 6 of the ALCS when Yost brought in Madson. You have no idea how many times I chanted "Just keep it in the park" before Bautista smacked it out. That's baseball. But funny how the Royals overcome these lapse, or make them count in their favor more often than chance would have it.

AIt was a terrible pitch, just like the one Bautista put in the seats. Madison Bumgarner didn't make those mistakes and the Royals couldn't hit him effectively. The Royals do a good job of minimizing mistakes and making the other team pay for their mistakes. But Familia's pitch was terrible and he let the Royals back in the game. And whoever told Cain to bunt in the 8th inning should be ashamed. That was a terrible decision.
